Thank you for playing MUSE! This digital sheet lets you create, manage, and save your characters locally/ to a secure cloud account. Click on any of the sections below to learn more.

Saving & Loading

Access all save and load options from the floating dock on the right side of the screen.

The Browser Save option stores your sheet in your browser's local storage. This sheet will only be accessible on this device and will be lost if you clear your browser's data. For more permanent storage, Cloud Save backs up your sheet to our servers, allowing you to access your characters from any device. Cloud Saves are required to add character portraits and join campaigns. Please note that cloud sheets and portraits not accessed for 18 months are automatically deleted.

The Sheet Selector is a dropdown menu displaying all your saved sheets, grouped by location (Browser or Cloud). Use the Load button to open the selected sheet from this dropdown.

The Download option exports your character as a .txt backup file. We advise you to do this regularly, such as after each session. These downloaded files can be imported on any device or opened with any standard text editor should you wish to leave our app. The Upload option allows you to import a previously downloaded .txt file. This will not erase any currently opened sheet that has already been saved, but if the currently opened sheet has not been saved it will be overwritten.

The New option creates a clean slate for building new characters by wiping the form without deleting any saved sheets. If a sheet has not been saved it will be lost. After clicking "New" you will be prompted to either create a sheet manually, or use a guided setup to roll up a character. The Delete option permanently removes the selected sheet from the Browser, the Cloud, or both.

Save Conflict Handling: If a sheet exists in both Browser and Cloud with the same name, you'll be prompted to choose which version to keep. You can also upgrade browser-only sheets to cloud saves or create offline copies of cloud sheets.

Cloud Accounts

Cloud accounts unlock the app's full functionality. To get started, Sign Up by creating an account with your email and a password. This is required for cloud saves, portraits, and campaigns. Once registered, simply Login to access your cloud-saved characters from any device.

If you prefer, you can use the app in Guest Mode without creating an account. Guests can only save to browser storage and cannot join campaigns or upload portraits. However, guests can always create an account later and upgrade their browser-saved sheets to cloud saves.

Dice Tray

Click the dice button to open the Dice Tray. From here, you can Select a Trait from your character sheet to roll an equal number of d6s. Use the Modifier field to add or subtract dice from your pool. Alternatively, you can enter a custom Dice Formula like "3d6+2" or "2d8" instead of rolling based on a Trait.

The Count 5s option allows you to count both 5s and 6s as successes. Other options may be made available as our app grows and we hear feedback from our community. When in a Campaign, the Roll Visibility setting lets you choose between a Public Roll (visible to all players) or a Private Roll (for the GM's eyes only).

Campaign Roll Log: When in a campaign, all dice rolls are logged and visible to the GM and other players. Roll notifications pop up when someone in your Campaign rolls. Your character name will appear alongside your rolls in the campaign log, as well as the date and time of the roll.

Campaigns & Multiplayer

Campaigns let you play with others in real-time via the Campaign Dashboard in the dock on the right side of the screen.

To Create a Campaign, start a new campaign as the Game Master (GM) and you'll receive a unique code to share with your players. To Join a Campaign, enter the campaign code provided by your GM. Upon joining, you will be prompted to select a character sheet to use in the campaign. The name of this character sheet will be used as your name in the campaign.

As a Game Master, you have access to a variety of management tools. You can view all player character sheets and manage campaign members. During combat, you can start and end encounters, add enemies and NPCs, control turn order, and advance turns. You also have the ability to adjust participant stats such as LP, Actions, and Tribulations, and can roll initiative for absent players.

2.2 User-Generated Content

When you use the App, you may create and store:

Character Sheet Data: Including character names, traits, abilities, items, talents, weapons, powers, notes, and other gameplay-related information
Character Portraits: Optional images you upload for your characters (limited to 5MB per image)
Campaign Data: Information about campaigns you create or join, including campaign names, member lists, roll logs, money transactions, and combat encounter data
Dev Codes: Optional codes provided by developers to unlock special features for specific game settings

2.3 Automatically Collected Information

We automatically collect certain information when you visit, use, or navigate the App:

Device Information: Browser type, operating system
Local Storage Data: The App uses browser local storage to store character data when you use Guest Mode or for offline functionality

3.2 reCAPTCHA

We use Google reCAPTCHA to protect our application from spam and abuse. Use of reCAPTCHA is subject to the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

3.3 Google Fonts

The App loads fonts from Google Fonts to enhance the user interface. This is a privacy-respecting service that does not track users.

4. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

Provide the Service: Create, store, and manage your character sheets and campaign data
Authenticate Users: Verify your identity and maintain secure access to your account
Cloud Synchronization: Sync your character data across devices when you're logged in
Campaign Features: Enable multiplayer campaign features including roll sharing, combat tracking, and money management

5. Data Storage and Security

5.1 Data Storage Locations

Cloud Data: Stored in Google Firebase servers (Cloud Firestore and Firebase Storage)
Local Data: Stored in your browser's local storage and cache (Service Worker)
Character Portraits: Stored in Firebase Storage under the path users/{userId}/character-images/

5.2 Security Measures

Your data is protected by HTTPS, Firebase rules, and App Check. Campaign sharing is limited to members you join; GMs see your sheet and rolls within that campaign only.

Encryption in Transit: All data transmitted between your device and our servers uses HTTPS/TLS encryption
Firebase Security Rules: We enforce strict database and storage rules to ensure users can only access their own data and authorized campaign data
Authentication: Email/password authentication with secure credential management
Access Controls: Campaign data is only accessible to campaign members; character sheets are private unless explicitly shared in a campaign
App Check: Protection against unauthorized access and abuse using Firebase App Check

5.3 Data Retention

Active Accounts: Your data is retained for 18 months following your last login.
Account Deletion: When you delete your account, we permanently delete:
- Your user account and authentication credentials
- All character sheets you've created
- All campaign memberships
- All character portrait images from storage
- All associated user settings and data

6. Data Sharing and Disclosure

6.1 We Do Not Sell Your Data

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties.

6.2 Limited Sharing Within Campaigns

When you join a campaign:

Game Masters (GMs) can view: Your character name, sheet data, active sheet, roll logs, and money transactions within that campaign
Other Players in the campaign can view: Your character name, portrait (if uploaded), roll results, and combat initiative when shared by the GM
Campaign Members can read character sheets of other members for campaign coordination

6.3 Service Providers

We share data with third-party service providers only to the extent necessary to operate the App:

Google Firebase: Hosts all cloud data, authentication, storage, and analytics

6.4 Legal Requirements

We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities (e.g., court orders, subpoenas).

7. Your Data Rights

You have the following rights regarding your data:

7.1 Access

You can access all your character data, campaign memberships, and account information at any time through the App.

7.2 Modification

You can edit, update, or modify your character sheets, campaign data, and account information (email, password) at any time.

7.3 Deletion

You can delete:

Individual Character Sheets: Through the App interface
Character Portraits: Through the App interface
Campaign Memberships: By leaving campaigns
Your Entire Account: Through Account Settings, which permanently deletes all your data

7.4 Export

You can download your character sheet data as .txt files for backup or transfer purposes.

7.5 Guest Mode

You can use the App without creating an account by selecting "Continue as Guest," which stores all data locally on your device only.

8. Children's Privacy

The App is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at museroleplaying@gmail.com.

9. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

9.1 Local Storage

The App uses browser local storage to:

Store character sheets in Guest Mode
Cache user preferences and settings
Enable offline functionality through Service Workers

9.2 Service Workers

The App uses Service Workers (Progressive Web App technology) to:

Cache application files for offline access
Improve loading performance
Enable app-like installation on mobile devices

9.3 Analytics

Firebase Analytics collects anonymized usage data to help us improve the app. This data is not tied to your personal information and does not use cookies.

10. Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and maintained on servers located outside of your state, province, country, or other governmental jurisdiction. By using the App, you consent to such transfers. Google Firebase operates globally and may store data in various regions.

11. Progressive Web App (PWA)

The App can be installed as a Progressive Web App on your device. When installed:

The App operates as a standalone application
Cached data is stored on your device for offline access
You may receive update notifications when new versions are available

12. Updates and Version Control

We use a versioned service worker (currently at cache version v15) to manage app updates. When we deploy updates:

You will be notified of available updates
You can choose when to update by refreshing the application
Cached data is preserved across updates

MUSE Character Sheet ("we," "our," or "us"). By using this app you agree to these Terms. If you disagree, do not use the app.

2. Description of Service

The MUSE Character Sheet App is a web-based application designed for creating, managing, and storing character sheets for tabletop role-playing games that use the MUSE Engine. The Service provides:

Character sheet creation and management tools
Cloud storage for registered users via Firebase
Local storage for guest users
Campaign management and multiplayer features
Character portrait uploading and storage
Offline functionality via Progressive Web App (PWA) technology
Multiple visual themes and customization options

3. User Accounts

3.1 Registration

To access cloud features, you must create an account by providing a valid email address and password. You are responsible for:

Maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials
All activities that occur under your account
Notifying us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account

3.2 Guest Mode

You may use the App without creating an account by selecting "Continue as Guest." Guest Mode stores all data locally on your device only, and we are not responsible for data loss if you clear your browser data or switch devices.

3.3 Account Termination

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account at any time for:

Violation of these Terms
Fraudulent, abusive, or illegal activity
Inactivity exceeding 18 months

You may delete your account at any time through Account Settings. Upon account deletion, all your data will be permanently removed as outlined in our Privacy Policy.

4. User Conduct and Content

4.1 Your Content

You retain all rights to the content you create using the App, including character sheets, names, descriptions, notes, and uploaded images. By using the App, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to store, process, and display your content solely for the purpose of providing the Service.

4.2 Prohibited Conduct

You agree not to:

Upload content that is illegal, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, or otherwise objectionable
Upload content that infringes any intellectual property rights, patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright, or other proprietary rights of any party
Upload malicious code, viruses, or any other harmful software
Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, other user accounts, or our servers
Use the Service to spam, phish, or engage in any fraudulent activity
Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code from the App
Use automated tools (bots, scrapers) to access the Service without our permission
Exceed reasonable usage limits or attempt to overload our servers

4.3 Content Moderation

We reserve the right (but have no obligation) to review, monitor, or remove any user content that violates these Terms or is otherwise objectionable. We do not pre-screen content and are not responsible for user-generated content.

5. Campaign Features and Data Sharing

When you join or create a campaign:

You consent to sharing certain character data with other campaign members as described in our Privacy Policy
Game Masters (GMs) may view your character sheets, roll logs, and campaign activity
Other players may view your character name, portrait, and shared rolls
You are responsible for the content you share within campaigns
Leaving a campaign removes your access to that campaign's data

6. Storage Limits and File Restrictions

The Service is provided free of charge with the following limits:

Character Portrait Images: Maximum 5MB per image
Supported Image Formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP
Data Storage: Storage quotas may be introduced later

We may remove or compress files that exceed these limits without prior notice.

7. Intellectual Property Rights

7.1 Our Intellectual Property

The App itself, including all source code, design, graphics, user interface, and functionality, is owned by MUSE RPG and is protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works without our express written permission.

7.2 MUSE RPG Content

References to the MUSE Engine, including game mechanics, paths, traits, and terminology, are the intellectual property of their respective owners.

7.3 Trademarks

"MUSE" and the "MUSE Character Sheet" and related logos are trademarks of MUSE Character Sheet. You may not use our trademarks without prior written consent.

8. Third-Party Services

The App uses the following third-party services, each governed by their own terms:

Google Firebase: Authentication, database, storage, and analytics (Firebase Terms)
Google reCAPTCHA: Spam and abuse protection (Google Terms)
Google Fonts: Typography (Font Terms)

We are not responsible for these third-party services or their terms.

9. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

9.1 "As-Is" Service

The Service is provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to:

Warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose
Warranties that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free
Warranties regarding the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of data

9.2 No Guarantee of Data Preservation

We do not guarantee that your data will be preserved indefinitely or that data loss will never occur. We strongly recommend that you:

Regularly download backups of your character sheets using the export feature
Maintain local copies of important data
Not rely solely on the Service for irreplaceable content

9.3 Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, MUSE RPG SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS OR REVENUES, WHETHER INCURRED DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, USE, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, RESULTING FROM:

Your use or inability to use the Service
Unauthorized access to or alteration of your data
Any conduct or content of any third party on the Service
Service interruptions, outages, or technical failures

9.4 Beta and Alpha Versions

The App is currently in Alpha development (version 3.1.4). Alpha and beta versions are experimental and may contain bugs, errors, or incomplete features. Use at your own risk.

10. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless MUSE RPG, its developers, and affiliates from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including legal fees) arising from:

Your use of the Service
Your violation of these Terms
Your violation of any rights of another user or third party
Your uploaded content

11. Service Availability and Modifications

11.1 Service Interruptions

We strive to provide reliable service, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted access. The Service may be temporarily unavailable due to:

Scheduled maintenance
Technical issues or server outages
Third-party service disruptions (e.g., Firebase downtime)
Force majeure events

11.2 Right to Modify or Discontinue

We reserve the right to:

Modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service (or any part thereof) at any time
Add or remove features
Apply usage limits or quotas
Transition from a free service to a paid service (with advance notice)

We will provide reasonable notice of material changes when possible, but are not obligated to do so.

12. Privacy

Your use of the Service is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which describes how we collect, use, and protect your data. By using the Service, you consent to our data practices as outlined in the Privacy Policy.

13. Children's Use

The Service is not intended for children under the age of 13. If you are under 13, you may not create an account or use the Service. If you are between 13 and 18, you should review these Terms with a parent or guardian before using the Service.

15. Dispute Resolution and Governing Law

15.1 Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States and the State of Texas, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

15.2 Informal Resolution

15.3 Arbitration

Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of the Service shall be resolved through binding arbitration, except that either party may seek injunctive relief in court for intellectual property disputes.

16. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will:

Update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this document
Post the revised Terms on this page
Notify users of material changes via in-app notification

Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

17. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.

18. Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and MUSE RPG regarding the Service and supersede all prior agreements.
